I asked my friend Dick, who is Danish, and a Chef (and yes, great, making him a Great Dane) what Danishes are called in Denmark. There’s a neat, though not necessarily appetizing slang term for them called “The Baker’s Bad Eye”. There’s nothing bad about Danishes, I said, with a look of disdain. And without further ado, my homage to said pastry!

Ode to a Danish

Alluring flaky morning pastry
Sinfully sweet and oh so tasty
Seducing taste buds with your charms
Embracing tongues in buttery arms

Come-hither fillings, tart lemon or cherry
Or lusty chocolate, or naughty berry
A dusting of powdered sugar or drizzle
Turns longing restrained into unbridled sizzle

And once the last crumb is inhaled with a sigh,
Scoff at the moniker “bakers bad eye”
