Tastes of Newfoundland-Bidgood’s

I grew up thinking of Bidgood’s as nothing more than a small store you dropped into on your way berry picking or “up da country” for the weekend. A couple of treats and bottles of pop and off you went. That little store has turned into a the premiere shopping destination for gourmands and lovers of Newfoundland cuisine, complete with it’s own restaurant and gift shop for all things provincial.


Located in the Goulds,(a small farming community southwest of St. John’s and now incorporated into the St. John’s metro area) Bidgoods was opened in 1963, celebrating 50 years this year. You can read the history of Roger Bidgood and his little shop here), and some items can now be ordered online.

An in-house bakeshop provides a steady supply of homemade bread, lassy buns, tea biscuits, date squares, partridgeberry pie and other local favourites. (Not just local stuff either, staples like croissants and danishes have their place on the shelf too).

The gift shop area features Newfoundland and Labrador books, music and art, and there’s frequently a local musician on site, performing.

My favourite part of the store, once I pry myself away from the pastries, is at the back. This is where all of the Newfoundland indigenous food, both raw and prepared, can be found.

You can buy seal flippers, bottled moose and rabbit, smoked capelin, native berries (partridge, squash, blue, bakeapples), and various ready to heat and eat meals made from same: moose, rabbit and flipper pies, fish and brewis, codcakes. Meat selection is like any deli counter, til a closer look at the labels: seal sausages, moose pepperoni.

If you’re visiting the east coast of the province at all, Bidgood’s has become a must-see destination spot.
